Lipari is the ideal starting point for exploring all the Aeolian Islands. From the Marina Corta port, hydrofoils and boats depart for Vulcano (20 minutes), Salina (30 minutes), Panarea, Stromboli and the remote Filicudi and Alicudi. Each island has a unique character: here is what to expect from each one.
Vulcano
20 minutes by hydrofoilMud baths, Gran Cratere, black sand beaches
The closest island to Lipari, Vulcano is famous for its sulfur mud baths, the hike up to the Gran Cratere (1 hour, stunning views of the Aeolian Islands) and its black volcanic sand beaches. For the mud baths we recommend Geoterme (geoterme.it): about 5 euros per person for access to the mud pool with showers and facilities. Easily visited in half a day.
Tip: Hike the crater early in the morning to avoid the heat. Bring closed shoes and water. The mud stains clothing: wear something old.
Stromboli
1.5-2 hours by hydrofoilActive volcano, Sciara del Fuoco, nighttime eruptions
Stromboli is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, with eruptions every 15-20 minutes visible from the Sciara del Fuoco. The evening boat tour to see the eruptions lit up against the night sky is a one-of-a-kind experience. The summit hike (924m) requires a mandatory guide.
Tip: Book the evening boat tour in advance. The summit hike must be booked with authorized guides. Strombolicchio (the sea stack) is perfect for snorkeling.
Panarea
1 hour by hydrofoilCala Junco, prehistoric village, nightlife
The smallest and most glamorous of the Aeolian Islands. Panarea offers Cala Junco (one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean), the prehistoric village of Capo Milazzese and an exclusive atmosphere with boutiques and trendy bars. Perfect for a day of sea and relaxation.
Tip: Visit Cala Junco in the morning, before the crowds arrive. The prehistoric village is free and offers incredible views. In August, Panarea is very crowded.
Salina
30-40 minutes by hydrofoilCapers, Malvasia wine, Il Postino filming location
The greenest of the Aeolian Islands, famous for its capers (the best in the world), Malvasia wine and as the filming location for the movie Il Postino. Two twin volcanoes make it the tallest island in the archipelago. Pollara (where the film was shot) offers one of the most beautiful sunsets in Italy.
Tip: Rent a scooter to explore the island. Visit a winery to taste Malvasia. The sunset at Pollara is unmissable.
Filicudi & Alicudi
1.5-2.5 hoursWild nature, Grotta del Bue Marino, absolute silence
The most remote and wild islands of the archipelago. Filicudi features the spectacular Grotta del Bue Marino sea cave and the prehistoric village of Capo Graziano. Alicudi has no roads, only steps and mules. For those seeking absolute silence and unspoiled nature.
Tip: Reachable as a day trip but connections are less frequent. Check ferry schedules. Bring supplies: amenities are minimal.
