Ferries and hydrofoils to Lipari — How to reach the Aeolian Islands

How to Get to Lipari

Ferries, hydrofoils, airports and all the practical tips to reach the jewel of the Aeolian Islands.

Getting to Lipari: a practical guide

Lipari has no airport, but reaching the island is easier than you might think. It is connected to Sicily and the mainland through an efficient network of ferries and hydrofoils departing from several ports. The sea voyage is already part of the experience: watching the Aeolian Islands appear on the horizon as you approach is an unforgettable moment.

The most convenient departure point is Milazzo, in the province of Messina, with numerous daily services running year-round. In summer, connections increase significantly, with hydrofoils departing every half hour during peak times. But there are alternatives from Messina, Naples and even Palermo. Let us go through everything in detail.

From Milazzo: the main connection

The port of Milazzo is the most popular departure point for Lipari and all the Aeolian Islands. The town is located on the north coast of Sicily, about 40 km from Messina and 200 km from Catania.

Hydrofoil (Aliscafo)

  • Duration: about 50 minutes
  • Summer frequency: every 30-60 minutes
  • Winter frequency: 4-6 services per day
  • Approximate price: 18-25 EUR one way
  • Note: faster but subject to cancellations in rough seas

Ferry (Traghetto)

  • Duration: about 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Frequency: 3-5 services per day
  • Approximate price: 12-18 EUR one way
  • Car transport: from about 40 EUR
  • Note: more stable in rough seas, allows car transport

Practical tip: do you need a vehicle on Lipari?

Yes, we recommend renting a scooter or a car, especially if you are staying in Pianoconte like at our apartments. Lipari town center is about 10 minutes by car and the beaches are spread across the island. Walking is doable if you enjoy it, but with children or in the summer heat a vehicle is practically essential.

If you arrive with your own car on the mainland, you can leave it in one of the guarded parking lots near Milazzo port (about 8-12 EUR per day) and rent a scooter or car directly on Lipari — you will find several rental agencies near the port.

Upon request, we can arrange a vehicle rental and a transfer from the port directly to the apartment. Just let us know when you book!

Other departure ports

From Messina

The port of Messina offers a convenient alternative, especially for those arriving from Calabria or the mainland. Hydrofoils to Lipari take about 1 hour 30 minutes. Services are less frequent than from Milazzo, but in summer there are daily departures with Liberty Lines. It is an excellent option if you arrive by train or from Reggio Calabria airport.

From Naples

A fascinating option for those coming from central-northern Italy. Overnight ferries depart from Molo Beverello or Mergellina port and arrive in Lipari in about 12-14 hours, sailing through the night. You leave in the evening and wake up in the Aeolian Islands. In summer there are also direct hydrofoils with a crossing time of about 5-6 hours, operated by SNAV and Liberty Lines.

From Palermo

In summer, Liberty Lines operates a seasonal hydrofoil service from Palermo (tourist port) arriving in Lipari in about 4 hours, with a stop in Cefalu. It is a good option if your flight lands at Falcone Borsellino airport. The service is generally available from June to September.

Maritime companies

Two main companies operate connections to the Aeolian Islands:

Liberty Lines

The leading hydrofoil company. It operates year-round from Milazzo and Messina, with an extensive network of connections between the islands. In summer it adds routes from Palermo and Cefalu. Online booking is recommended, especially in July and August.

Siremar / Caronte&Tourist

They operate the larger ferries, suitable for car and freight transport. Ferries are slower but more stable in rough seas and more affordable. Departures from Milazzo year-round and from Naples with the overnight ferry.

Nearest airports

Lipari has no airport, but two airports on the mainland offer convenient connections with the rest of Italy and Europe:

Catania Fontanarossa Airport (CTA)

The largest airport in eastern Sicily, with flights from all over Europe and Italy. From Catania to Milazzo it takes about 2 hours by car or bus. Direct shuttle bus services connect the airport to Milazzo port (Giuntabus, about 15 EUR). It is the best choice for those looking for budget flights with low-cost airlines.

Reggio Calabria Airport (REG)

A smaller but strategic airport: it is the closest to the Aeolian Islands as the crow flies. From Reggio Calabria you can reach Messina in about 30 minutes (ferry across the Strait), from where hydrofoils depart for Lipari. Flights are less numerous, but if you find a convenient connection, it is the fastest option to reach the island.

Practical travel tips

Luggage

Luggage space on hydrofoils is limited. Bringing a standard-size trolley and a backpack is the best choice. Avoid bulky suitcases: remember that you will need to get around on foot or with small vehicles on the island. Ferries have more space, but still travel light.

Bookings

In peak season (July-August) book tickets at least a week in advance, especially for weekends. The Liberty Lines and Siremar websites allow online purchases. For the overnight ferry from Naples, book well in advance: cabins sell out quickly.

Weather conditions and rough seas

Hydrofoils are canceled when the sea is too rough (generally with waves over 2 meters). Ferries handle rough seas better. In winter and transitional periods, always check the status of connections before traveling. The best months to travel are from May to October: the sea is almost always calm and connections are very frequent.

Car, scooter or on foot?

Bringing a car to Lipari is possible by ferry, but in summer non-resident vehicle access is often restricted by local regulations. The best choice is to rent a scooter or car directly on Lipari — you will find several rental agencies near the port. It is the most convenient way to reach beaches, restaurants and our apartment in Pianoconte. Walking is possible but demanding, especially with children or in the height of summer. AST buses connect the main villages but services are not very frequent.

Best time to visit

June and September are the ideal months: the weather is splendid, the sea is warm, connections are frequent and prices are lower than in July-August. May and October still offer pleasant weather with fewer tourists. Winter is charming but connections are reduced and many activities close.

Getting around Lipari: bus, taxi and transfers

Lipari is a small island and getting around is simple. Our apartments are located in Pianoconte, a quiet village about 10 minutes by car from Lipari town center. Here are your options for getting around.

AST Bus

The AST bus service connects Pianoconte to Lipari town center and the main locations on the island. Schedules vary by season: in summer services are more frequent. Check the updated timetable for the Lipari-Pianoconte line on the AST website or at bus stops. Tickets cost a few euros and can be bought on board or at tobacco shops.

Taxi and scooter rental

Taxis are available at the port and by phone. Scooter rental is the most popular way to explore Lipari freely: you will find several rental shops near the Marina Corta port. Some agencies deliver the scooter directly to the port upon your arrival.

Check-in / check-out transfer service

Upon request, we offer a transfer service from the hydrofoil or ferry directly to the apartment in Pianoconte, and back again at check-out. We can also arrange a vehicle rental for your stay. Just let us know when you book.

Our apartments are in a quiet and private residential area, away from the noise and nightlife of the town center — perfect for those seeking relaxation and silence after a day of beach and adventures. The location is ideal for exploring the entire island by scooter or public transport.

What to do in case of bad weather or rough seas

Rough seas can happen, especially during transitional seasons. If hydrofoils are canceled, do not panic: here is what to do whether you are stuck in Milazzo waiting to depart, or already on Lipari.

Stuck in Milazzo?

If bad weather blocks departures, Milazzo offers several places to wait: the old town with its Castle, waterfront restaurants and cozy cafes. Conditions usually improve within 1-2 days.

Tip: if you need accommodation in Milazzo while waiting, Casa Milà is a property managed by acquaintances of ours in Milazzo. A convenient and trusted option to spend the night while waiting for the sea to calm down. Contact us and we will put you in touch.

Stuck on Lipari?

If the sea is rough and you cannot leave the island, do not worry: there is plenty to do even in the rain. Visit the Archaeological Museum inside the Castle (one of the most important in the Mediterranean), stroll through the old town alleys, enjoy a granita with brioche at one of the cafes, or relax in your apartment with the fully equipped kitchen.

Generally the ferries (larger and more stable than hydrofoils) continue to operate even in rough seas. Bad weather rarely lasts more than 1-2 days.

Lost or delayed luggage?

It can happen that your luggage doesn't arrive or you need a quick change of clothes. Don't panic: in Lipari you'll find Il Bottighino di Ziino Daniele, a clothing shop in the town centre where you can buy everything you need while waiting for your luggage to catch up.

Have you planned your trip?

Now all that is left is to book your apartment in Pianoconte. Casa Mirea and Casa Rina await you in a quiet area with panoramic views and a private terrace.
